01 · Origin
Sports Fan Plus™ evolved over several years, one idea leading to another until it became a foundation of The Sports Fan®.
The process began with the creation of The Sports Fan Hall of Fame®. The goal was simple: empower sports fans to decide who deserves recognition. But once the idea took shape, a crucial question emerged — how do we protect the integrity of the voting system?
02 · Membership
MembershipOne option was to charge fans every time they voted. Want to vote ten times? Fine — we’d collect their money ten times. There was certainly an economic argument for it.
But if the vote was going to have integrity, every sports fan needed an equal voice.
One fan. One vote.Every vote carrying the same weight.
Our answer was membership, and the concept of Sports Fan Plus™ began to take shape. At the time, it was simply a solution — we didn’t yet know where it would lead.
03 · Participation
ParticipationSports fans have opinions on nearly everything in sports, so why limit their voice to the Hall of Fame? Members could rank, rate, and predict outcomes, vote on awards, and nominate honorees. Fans also have questions — about their teams and the broader sports world — and within Sports Fan Plus™, they could put those questions directly to the sports fan community.
The idea of membership, paired with active participation, kept evolving. It was no longer about a single vote; it became a way for fans to engage year-round. As the concept took shape, we named it Sports Fan Plus™.
It was becoming a perpetual model — driven by the seasonality of sports and built around the two fundamental ways fans participate: doing and interacting.
04 · Ownership
These activities gave sports fans new ways to take part, but something essential was still missing — the hook every website needs to keep people coming back. Participation gave fans a reason to engage. We hadn’t yet given them a reason to feel attached: ownership.
Then one day, our head of web engineering asked a simple question: “Why don’t we give every sports fan their own personalized sports page?”
Our first reaction was, “What are you thinking? We can’t give everyone their own sports page.” The idea seemed almost absurd. Why would anyone need their own page? But it wouldn’t go away.
Everyone gets their own page…
Then it started to make sense — just not in the way he’d first framed it.
What if every Sports Fan Plus™ member had their own Personal Sports Page?
They could choose the teams and sports they follow, select the local voices and sources they want to hear from, and bring it all together in one place — the stats they want to dig into, the odds they want to check, videos from their favorite podcasters.
Their teams, their colors, their choices. Their sports world, fully in their control, staring back at them.
05 · Where it led
What began as a question about protecting the integrity of a vote grew into something much larger.
Participation — Sports Fan Plus™ — engaged the fan. The Personal Sports Page gave them ownership.
